Freeport HS’s NJROTC annual inspection
Freeport High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps stood before Freeport school administrators, board of education members, staff, family and friends as they proudly participated in the annual inspection, drill and parade in the Freeport High School gymnasium on Dec. 5.
The presentation of colors opened the event with a beautiful performance of the national anthem by Freeport High School orchestra members.
Senior Naval Science Instructor Commander Christian Gaskill welcomed guests and expressed his pride for the dedication and commitment of the cadets. “We have a wonderful group of cadets, and I am so excited for the future of the Freeport NJROTC. Each of these individuals dedicated a significant amount of time and effort to demonstrate for you the skills they learn in the program. Thank you to the administration, staff and families for your support.”
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham proudly attended the annual inspection. “This is a very special day for all of us and I look forward to this event each year. For nearly two decades the NJROTC program has been in our high school and I am so proud of its success,” said Dr. Kuncham. “Today is about more than passing an inspection. It is showing that we value leadership, honor, determination and dignity. The rigorous training, the academic study, community service and all you are involved in is something that you will always carry with you into the future. Thank you for being a part of this program and thank you families for being a part of their journey to success. I am beyond proud of you.”
Under the guidance of Commander Christian Gaskill, the company of 150 cadets performed their drills and inspection requirements before Navy Commander and NJROTC Area Two Manager Eric Humphries. With outstanding scores on all aspects of the inspection, the battalion proudly passed.
Commander Humphries addressed the cadets and those in attendance congratulating them on an outstanding annual inspection and for proudly operating at the highest standards of the U.S. Navy.
Freeport HS’s NHS Welcomes New Inductees
Freeport High School’s Performing Arts Center was filled with pride as the high school’s National Honor Society welcomed more than 100 new inductees to the prestigious organization during their annual National Honor Society induction ceremony.
Adviser Eileen Shultis enthusiastically welcomed guests to the ceremony, followed by the presentation of colors by the Freeport High School NJROTC.
Dr. Kishore Kuncham, superintendent of schools, addressed the new inductees reminding them of their extraordinary academic achievements, and the importance of dedication and commitment.
“You are amazing leaders, you can transcend the challenges that life brings and make a true difference in your lives and the lives of others,” said Dr. Kuncham. “Continue to build on your character and your service to others. There are many in need of your knowledge to make our world a better and more harmonious place. As a Freeport High School National Honor Society member your work is not done. Do more, be more and give more. Your initiative to excel in school and in life will allow you to transcend beyond your goals. Congratulations!”
The National Honor Society officers, President Etienne Sasenarine, Vice President Jeremy Dominguez, Secretary Laurel Owen, Treasurer Tatiana Arieta, Student Liaison Cassie Smith and Director of Community Service Marialy Liz-Nunez spoke about the four pillars of the National Honor Society: character, scholarship, leadership and service and the importance of upholding these pillars as new inductees.
The traditional National Honor Society candlelighting ceremony was held, and Freeport High School Principal, Ms. Gisselle Campbell-Ham, and National Honor Society President Etienne Sasenarine presented the inductees with a medal to represent their newly achieved membership into the National Honor Society.

Freeport High School Spanish Honor Society brings joy to Archer Street School
Members of the Freeport High School Spanish Honor Society, under the direction of adviser Ms. Bussey and Director of Second Languages Ms. Chaves, made a special visit to Archer Street School right before the holidays. In addition to surprising the students with holiday gifts, the students read to the younger students and spent time working together on several fun activities.
Freeport High School Earns New York State Seal of Biliteracy Again
Dr. Jordan González, administrative coordinator of the Long Island Regional Bilingual Resource Network representing the New York State Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages, visited Freeport High School to observe students and faculty completing their culminating project presentations for the New York State Seal of Biliteracy. The district successfully completed the audit of their interview process.
Freeport Public Schools was one of only 20 school districts in New York State to participate in this program during its inaugural year in 2016. Since the 2016-2017 school year, 360 Freeport High School graduates have earned the seal of biliteracy in French, Italian and Spanish.
“Providing our students with the opportunity to learn to think and communicate in a second language is an invaluable skill as they enter college or their chosen career,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham said. “We are pleased to have been among the first school districts in the state to offer this advanced opportunity to our students in 2016 and congratulate those students who have successfully demonstrated their fluency in a second language.”
This award is denoted by a seal affixed to the student’s diploma, a notation on the student’s high school transcript and a medallion. To earn the NYSSB, students must demonstrate Intermediate High proficiency in English and the required level of proficiency in one or more world languages set forth by the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages, adopted by the New York State Board of Regents in March 2021.
The number of students from the Class of 2023 who are eligible to earn the New York State Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma will be determined during the third quarter of the school year. This year, students are working toward achieving the Seal in American Sign Language, French, Haitian-Creole, Mandarin, Spanish, Polish, Russian and Tagalog.
Freeport High School Students Explore Airport Employment Opportunities
Freeport High School juniors and seniors had the benefit of hearing firsthand about the vast array of employment opportunities available at John F. Kennedy International Airport. This program was another opportunity for students to explore various career pathways.
Both Verdia Noel, director of Business Development NY at the Council for Airport Opportunities of New York and New Jersey and Aaron Miner, outreach specialist, spoke with students to present information regarding the various employment opportunities at the airport. During their presentations, students learned about entry level career opportunities available immediately upon graduation, as well as opportunities available after students graduate from either college or trade schools. These include positions in catering, customer service, food service, mechanics, retail, security, flight attending, the science and medical fields and more. The application process was also presented.
Jose Cuevas, senior manager, Commercial Customer Experience and Commercial Department, JFK International Air Terminal, facilitated a presentation titled, “Pathways to Consider for Employment Opportunities.” He discussed his background, career path, how each of his career experiences led to the next, as well as the different career pathways that are available to today’s students. While sharing his journey, he shared additional inspiring stories. The program provided the students with a wealth of information.
Boys Winter Track Team Moves on to New York State Track and Field Championship
The Freeport High School boys winter track team had a great performance at the state qualifier. The Varsity Boys Winter Track State Qualifiers were held on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The following students qualified for the NYS Championship, which will be held on March 4 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island:
