DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Freeport School District's Arts Department affords all students the opportunity to study music and visual arts. The vision of Freeport Public Schools is to inspire in all the desire to learn and succeed. Our schools will be safe learning communities that celebrate our achievements and encourage active partnerships with families and the entire community. We will empower students to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the future.
Our Freeport Arts programs align to the new New York State Standards for the Arts, which are designed on the following artistic processes: Creating, Presenting/Performing/Producing, Responding and Connecting. The NYS Standards for the Arts includes five disciplines, and our arts curricula proudly provides students with opportunities to experience each: Music, Visual Art, Media Art, Dance and Theater.
ELEMENTARY K-4: FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS
Elementary students are immersed in visual art, general music, orchestra and band in grades K-4. Throughout their artistic education in elementary school, students are exposed to the elements of art and music, experience a wide and varied repertoire of artists, and gain authentic artistic opportunities through performance-based assessments and community presentations such as annual winter and spring festivals of the Arts. Students also have a variety of club opportunities available to them including Art Club, Dance/Step Club, and Chorus.
Every elementary child is provided with the opportunity to showcase their artwork at the state and national levels through visual art festivals and competitions through the Art Supervisors Association All County Art Exhibit, and participation in music festivals sponsored by the New York State School Music Association, and the Nassau Music Educators Association. The course offerings by grade level are listed below:
Kindergarten-Grade 2: Visual Art and General Music
Grade 3: Visual Art and General Music
Grade 4: Visual Art, General Music (Choral Emphasis), and the option to begin Instrumental Studies in Orchestra or Band
INTERMEDIATE & MIDDLE SCHOOL 5-8: FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS
Students at the Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School and J.W. Dodd Middle School have the opportunity to study visual art, chorus, band, percussion, orchestra, and general music. The intermediate and middle school experience provides students with the opportunity to become more independent learners, taking advantage of the many available experiences that will help to shape them into soloists and innovative artists. Our intermediate and middle school students gain authentic artistic opportunities through performance-based assessments, and presentations such as annual winter and spring festivals of the Arts. Students also have a variety of club opportunities available to them, such as Step/Drill Team, Drama Club, Select Chorale, Art Club, Musical Theater, Select Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble, some of which afford them the opportunity to work in concert with Freeport High School artists.
Our intermediate and middle school students are provided with the opportunity to showcase their work at the state and national levels through visual art festivals and competitions through the Art Supervisors Association All County Art Exhibit, and participation in music festivals sponsored by the New York State School Music Association and the Nassau Music Educators Association. The course offerings by grade level are listed below:
