College Fair at Freeport High School
Third Graders Get Hooked on Firefighters
For the 18th year, the third grade students at Freeport Public Schools’ Bayview Avenue School are participating in the Hooked on Firefighters program.
The program, which begins in the fall and concludes in the spring, is an exciting opportunity for the students. Each third grade class is assigned a Freeport Village firefighter who will visit the classrooms throughout the year and teach students various lessons on fire safety and prevention through presentations, demonstrations and activities.
This year’s program kicked off on Oct. 13 with students meeting their class firefighter, followed by a tour of a firetruck and all its components. Students were also able to ask questions and speak to their firefighter about all things related to fire safety.
In the spring, at the conclusion of the Hooked on Firefighters program, the Bayview Avenue third graders will visit the Nassau County Firefighters Museum with the Freeport Village Fire Department.
Freeport High School Homecoming 2022: Spirit, Pride and Success
Freeport High School’s homecoming 2022 brought students, staff and community members together to celebrate their school spirit, community pride and to cheer on the home team.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Board of Education President Maria Jordan-Awalom along with board of education trustees, administrators, alumni and community political representatives, students, staff and families joined in the homecoming celebration.
Before the game, there were various offerings of delicious food, snacks, refreshments and spirit wear. The Freeport High School marching band led the parade along the high school track prior to the start of the game. Throughout the game, the stands were overflowing with enthusiastic fans who cheered during the game and the entertaining halftime performances. The high school’s marching band, color guard, cheerleaders and dance group did an outstanding job.
The varsity football team came out to win and they did not disappoint their supportive fans. The Red Devils played an exhilarating game that ended with a win over the Syosset Braves 22-21. Homecoming 2022 was a spectacular event from start to finish and another fond memory for all who participated.
Freeport High School Bound for College Fair
Freeport High School gymnasium was filled with students and their families attending the Bound for College Fair and Workshops. The college fair was designed to give students the opportunity to personally meet with college representatives, and to gather valuable information regarding the college application process, financial aid opportunities and the requirements for NCAA athletic scholarships.
Representatives from more than 80 colleges, universities, technical schools, and branches of the military participated. “It was wonderful to see so many students and their families attending this year’s college fair,” said Director of Guidance Emma Perdomo. “This is a great opportunity for our students to focus on their career goals and to learn more about the college application process and how to successfully apply to colleges that will provide the education they need to achieve their goals.”
To help their fellow classmates navigate through the fair, members of the National Honor Society were on hand to answer questions and offer their assistance. As part of the college fair, students and their families also attended several workshops that focused on: Preparing for the College Process; NCAA and Athletic Scholarship Workshop; and Financial Aid – How to Save for College.
J.W. Dodd receives Silver Partnership Status from Junior Achievement NY
J.W. Dodd Middle School was recognized by Junior Achievement New York with Silver Partnership Status for the 2021-2022 school year.
The recognition is based on the school’s participation in JA New York’s Finance Park Program, the school’s continued high level of engagement and their commitment to empowering students to achieve economic success.
With this recognition, J.W. Dodd students participating in Junior Achievement have access to additional curriculum and experiential programs, as well as opportunities that focus on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness.

Northwell Community Scholars Program kicks off at Freeport High School
Ten Freeport High School freshmen, who were selected to participate in the Northwell Community Scholars program last June, have officially kicked off their involvement in the program.
During an orientation meeting hosted at Freeport High School, the students met with several Northwell Community Scholars Program managers to learn more about the expectations, requirements and various events and learning opportunities they will have available to them as part of the program. They also participated in several activities to become better acquainted with their new mentors.
“It is very exciting to have Northwell work with our students and offer even more opportunities for learning and growth outside of the educational offerings within our school district,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kishore Kuncham. “It is the goal of Freeport Public Schools to always find new ways for our students to be successful and pursue their passions and the Northwell Community Scholars Program is a great addition to the many opportunities we aim to provide on a regular basis.”
The 10 program participants are: Ebrihima Ceesay, Brenda Fernandez, Kimberly Herrarte Enriquez, Chase Holt, Angelina Ibarrondo, Aaliyah Loque, Joseph Miguel Romero Garcia, Genesis Rodriguez Flores, Raschel Siguenza Peralta and Ashley Zavala Martinez.
The Northwell Community Scholars Program’s goal is to help provide students with opportunities for academic advancement and career exploration
High School Senior Headed to All-National Chorus
Once again, a Freeport High School student has been selected to perform with the All-National Chorus. Senior Brianna Bras received perfect scores for two consecutive years at her NYSSMA All-State auditions and was selected to the 2022 NAfME All-National Mixed Chorus. This is the second time a Freeport student has received this enviable recognition.
Bras,a three year Select Chorale member, will perform at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland next month.
“Brianna is a truly talented and passionate musician, who has worked diligently to receive this acclaim,” said Freeport Select Chorale Director Monique Retzlaff. “I am truly proud of her and look forward to seeing where her excellent musical ability and vocal skills will take her in the future.”
The Freeport School District and Freeport High School administration congratulate Brianna Bras on this recognition.
A Day Outdoors for New Visions Students
Students from New Visions Elementary School recently took a trip to the Brookville Outdoor and Environmental Center. The students participated in various activities where they were able to facilitate personal and interpersonal growth, communication, problem-solving, trust-building, risk-taking, and cooperation with each other and the environmentalists.
Community was built through fun and engaging activities that advanced social-emotional skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and trust. It was a fun day for all.
