Early Childhood Education Center
The Early Childhood Center is a very special school. The youngest learners in the District are here at Columbus. We have over 250 Universal Pre-K and over 200 Kindergarten students. Our motto is "It All Starts Here". Through 'hands-on' experiences, the children learn about letters, sounds, numbers, and so much more. Coming to school is a joyful experience where the children begin their journeys to becoming 'life-long learners'. For most, the journey begins with the morning bus ride. Children arrive each morning with big smiles and eager looks of anticipation. "What will today bring," is the unspoken question of the day. Our goal is to help the youngest Freeport School District students begin their educational careers as confident people and excited about learning.
Pre-Kindergarten
Our pre-k students attend five days a week for full day, or 2½ hours per day. During the half day sessions or full day sessions, the district's youngest students learn basic literacy, numeracy, science. Social studies skills are taught through direct instruction as well as through an integration of art, music, movement and play.
Kindergarten
Our kindergarten children attend full days. The District's Dual Language program begins here at Columbus for some of our students. Through the Dual Language program, the children receive instruction in both English and Spanish. Just as importantly, they learn about the other's culture. Additionally, general education classes as well as classes for children with special needs are part of our kindergarten. We all learn from each other. While more "formal" than Pre-K, kindergarten children also learn through direct instruction as well as art, music, movement and play.

Columbus joins Global Running Day
Full of energy and ready to run, the students of Freeport Public Schools’ Columbus Avenue School laced up their sneakers to celebrate Global Running Day on June 4.
Throughout the day, students took turns heading outside where they were challenged to run as many laps as they could during their designated time slots. Teachers helped track the number of laps by marking a popsicle stick each time a student completed a lap. At the end of the day, the sticks were collected to create a Global Running Day display in the school’s main hallway, showcasing the students’ efforts and schoolwide commitment to staying active.
“We look forward to Global Running Day each year,” said Principal Dr. Alma Rocha. “While the students have fun they are also learning that physical activity is a healthy habit that can benefit them their entire lives!”
Global Running Day is celebrated annually to encourage people of all ages and abilities to stay active and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of running.
Columbus Avenue’s Discovery Day sends students on space-themed adventures
Kindergarten students at Columbus Avenue launched into a world of exploration during the school’s annual Discovery Day on May 15.
The exciting, space-themed event kicked off in the gymnasium, where students participated in a variety of hands-on activities including rover races, a comet toss and moon sand play. They also sorted rocks and engaged in other interactive missions designed to spark curiosity about outer space.
Back in their classrooms, students read space-themed books, learned about the planets in the solar system and discovered the day-to-day life of astronauts.
Adding to the immersive experience, teachers transformed hallways and classrooms into stunning space exhibits. Students toured the building, which featured imaginative displays of planets, comets, meteors, constellations and the sun.
Columbus Avenue’s Discovery Day proved to be an out-of-this-world experience for the district’s littlest learners.
