Varsity Cheerleaders Win Second Place at NYS Championship

The Freeport High School varsity cheerleading team placed second in the Coed Class at the New York State Championships in Binghamton on March 2. The team qualified to compete in the championship by winning the Nassau County Championship in the Coed Class at Farmingdale State College on Feb. 17.

The team had an extremely impressive season. They won the UCA Empire Regional competition in Small Varsity Division 1, made it to the semifinals and quarterfinals at the UCA National Championships and were undefeated in the Coed Class in Nassau County.

"This was the best season in program history,” head coach Laurie Kolodny said. “Cheerleading is a very long season and every athlete on the traditional and gameday team gave their everything every day. As coaches, we wanted to give our team everything they needed to win and each week our athletes solidly executed their skills. We had goals of winning counties and getting back to states and our athletes were going to do whatever it took to make sure that happened. Their confidence grew with each hit and win every week. We are extremely proud of all our athletes. They deserved all they got this season. They are so humble, exude sportsmanship and just wanted to make everyone proud."

Congratulations to the following coaches and team members for a great winning season: head coach Laurie Kolodny, assistant coaches Erin Dean and Jessica Falck, team captains senior Angela Galvan and junior Nicole Hernandez and team members Emma Adeniran, Ceyda Bektas, Lordia Bossman, Breanna Campbell, Brianna Dean, Jeffrey Deras Moya, Jamie Gallegos, Mya Grayson, Shania Hazel, Kaylah Jimenez, Ciana Kunen, Brooklyn McKenzie, Shaelynn Peterson, Jaylynn Rodriguez, Alexis Sewer, Adrianna Taveras, Brian Truskolaski and Rianna Williams.
