On March 5, 91 students from the J. W. Dodd Middle School, led by adviser Ms. Genesis Martinez, proudly walked into the Freeport High School Performing Arts Center to be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.

The inductees were warmly welcomed with applause by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Board of Education President Maria Jordan-Awalom and their families and friends.

To be considered for induction into this prestigious national academic honor society, the students were required to maintain an 85% average, complete an application that included an essay, perform 10 hours of community service and receive two letters of recommendation.

Many students were able to exceed the 10-hour requirement and collectively the inductees completed 1,200 hours of community service including participating in a Valentines for Veterans project for the local VFW chapter in Baldwin, donating clothes to the local thrift shop and participating in countless school sponsored events.

To symbolize their induction, the students received a National Junior Honor Society pin and recited the society’s pledge during their induction ceremony. The ceremony took place in person and virtually so that all students and their loved ones could be present for this momentous occasion.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham and Board of Education President Maria Jordan-Awalom congratulated the students and expressed their pride in the students’ academic achievements. Current officers of the Freeport High School National Honor Society spoke to the students about the significance and importance of their induction into the honor society and encouraged them to explore new opportunities when they enter Freeport High School.
