Students, administrators and staff filled the Performing Arts Center at Freeport High School for the school’s annual Hispanic Heritage Assembly on Oct. 30. Freeport High School Principal Gisselle Campbell-Ham and Assistant Principal Dr. Aaron Johnson shared information on the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month to start the annual celebration.
Members of the Freeport High School Culture Club presented an interesting and informative slideshow on numerous Hispanic countries as they spoke about the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month.

This year’s keynote speaker was Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly Phil Ramos who spoke about the influence of Hispanic culture in America and encouraged students to be proud of their heritage.

“We have to work together, help each other, network with each other, lift ourselves up and educate ourselves,” Mr. Ramos said. “Throughout history, that is the only thing that will help us. It is your education that will lead you to that success.”

The assembly concluded with a performance from the high school band, A Touch of Brass, who performed the Latin song, “Señor Salsa,” by John Wasson.
