Elementary Students Celebrate Read Across America

National Read Across America Week kicked off on March 2, and the students in Leo F. Giblyn and New Visions elementary schools celebrated the magic of books with special guest readers from their schools, across the district and within the community.

Leo F. Giblyn Elementary School hosted several guests including Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Board of Education President Maria Jordan-Awalom, Assistant Superintendent of Educational and Administrative Services

Dr. Helen Kanellopoulos, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, Mr. Jonathan Bloom and several other local officials who each read a book to classes throughout the day.

“Freeport Public Schools is on a continuous journey to promote the joys of reading to our students, while also helping them build strong literacy skills,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. “Read Across America is another way we can engage our students and continue to build a culture of literacy.”

New Visions Elementary School participated in Read Across America Day with

staff members who rotated throughout the day to read to different classes. This allowed students to enjoy listening to someone read an interesting book to them, but also have a chance to meet teachers in their school they might not normally see.
The National Education Association’s Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. The program focuses on motivating children and teens to read via events, partnerships and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone.
