Students commemorate Sept. 11

Students throughout the district commemorated the tragic events of Sept. 11 honoring those who lost their lives and acknowledging those who have dedicated their lives to keeping Freeport safe.  It is a time for reflection, unity, and education, as we teach the next generation about the profound impact of 9/11 on our society and the enduring spirit of resilience that emerged from the ashes of that dark day.

At Freeport High School, members of the JROTC conducted an in-school memorial with announcements throughout the day commemorating the events of 9/11. The NJROTC also remembered and honored the victims and survivors at the Bayview Firehouse 3 Memorial.

New Visions Elementary School hosted its annual 9/11 commemorative event inviting members of the Freeport Fire Department and the Freeport Police Department. Students and staff wore red, white and blue to symbolize peace and unity. Student, Rosmery Peguero read the poem, "Heroes," followed by a moment of silence as the song, “We Remember,” played in the background.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham recognized the work of those who serve the community and offered words of appreciation. “We will never forget those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 and we continue to offer our unending gratitude to those who dedicate their lives to protect us,” he said. “We are all changemakers and must work every day to spread peace in our communities and throughout the world.”
